Hospice Care: Understanding the 4 Levels of Care

These levels of care are the rights of a hospice patient and they are given under specific circumstances.

Routine Home Care
This is the type of care extended to a terminally ill patient who doesn’t have out-of-control symptoms. The patient is cared for in the place they consider home, whether this is a facility or their actual residence. In routine home care, your loved one will receive the following services to provide them comfort:
Regular visits from the managing nurse
Visits from the social worker (only when necessary)
Care services from home health aides (includes assistance on activities of daily living)
Dietary counseling
Coordination with the hospice medical director
Therapy (only when necessary)
Care equipment
Respite Care

In this condition, the hospice team will make close coordination with your loved one’s physicians and another healthcare team. There could also be adjustments to their medications. It is your right to talk with the hospice care director. If you think that your loved one is not receiving the attentive care they should be receiving, talk to them immediately.
Continuous Nursing Care
This is another level of care that your loved one is entitled to receive from hospice. Continuous nursing care is given when their symptoms are already considered out of control. This service is round-the-clock care provided by skilled nurses. Your loved one can still receive continuous nursing care even if they are in their own residence.
