Kristi’s Corner

In loving memory of Kristi.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. We urge women everywhere to get those mammograms!!

Early detection is the key to survival and Life's Journey Hospice is a huge supporter of several breast cancer organizations that help women and men alike. Personally, I have lost family members, and precious patients, and two years ago on Christmas Day, tragically, I lost my best friend Kristi Mathis Gardner here at our facility. Her battle was a short few years and I watched it take so much from her and her family. I still grieve her loss deeply and in her honor, I have joined the fight against this devastating disease.

Each month, we feature a positive and encouraging letter that was sent to us by someone during that month thankful for our services at Life’s Journey Hospice. It is called Kristi’s Corner; in honor of her, we want to keep sharing positive and encouraging messages even in the most difficult of times.

God bless the fighters and those who fought so hard. Let's never cease to raise awareness!

"Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held in October every year, was created in 1985 to promote screening and prevention of the disease, which affects one in eight women in the United States every year and 2.3 million women worldwide. Known best for its pink theme color, the month features a number of campaigns and programs — conducted by groups ranging from breast cancer advocacy organizations to local community organizations to major retailers — aimed at:

-supporting people diagnosed with breast cancer, including metastatic breast cancer

-educating people about breast cancer risk factors

-stressing the importance of regular screening, starting at age 40 or the age that’s appropriate for your personal breast cancer risk

-fundraising for breast cancer research

Our Life’s Journey “pink ladies” are hitting the road and heading over with bags of goodies to the Hendrick’s County Senior Center & IU West Oncology Center today to promote National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Our goal is to raise awareness of this complex disease which is diagnosed in over 260,000 women and 2,400 men each year in the United States alone. Important tips: Know your family history Know your risk factors Know how you can lower your risk factors Know when to get a breast screening and Know where you can get that screening!

Go to CDC.gov/cancer/breast.index.htm to learn more! This has taken so many of our own patients, loved ones, and loved ones of our staff and friends, as well. Help us raise awareness by learning more today!
